Most of the controversy involves talcum powder and Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder that may have contained traces of asbestos. Some talc samples at J&J over the years have tested positive for asbestos. It is possible that such tainted powder can cause cancer. It is debatable whether talcum powder without asbestos can cause cancer.

Also, breathing talcum powder into the lungs can lead to respiratory problems. So, it is wise to be careful when you use talcum powder so that you do not end up inhaling it. If you use talcum powder on your genitals as a woman, it is recommended to pat it around the outside of the genitals and not directly on the vagina.
