The danger of talc usage stems from asbestos, which is a mineral that is widely known to cause cancer. Some talc in its pure form is naturally contaminated with asbestos, and when this asbestos-containing talc is included as an ingredient in a household product, it can increase the risk of cancer when used regularly. Years of companies marketing talcum-based baby powder and body-freshening products to consumers for use all over the body have contributed to talc being an extremely common health and beauty ingredient. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the link between talc, asbestos, and increased cancer risk started to emerge, with some talcum powders testing positive for dangerous asbestos. Since then, there have been a number of cases where regular talcum powder consumers have been diagnosed with cancers such as mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. While not all talcum powders are or have been contaminated with asbestos, research has linked asbestos-contaminated talc with numerous instances of cancer diagnoses and even death.
